Isaak Judelevich lived in Kaunas together with his wife Raya and daughter Gita. Kaunas was occupied by the Germans on the 25th of June, 1941. During the very first days of the war local Lithuanian collaborators started catching and killing Jews in the streets of Kaunas. Therefore, Isaak Judelevich turned to Professor of Medicine, Pranas Mažylis, whom he knew before the war and with whose consent Isaak spent the first days of the war in his house. When the ghetto was formed, Isaak moved there and united with his family members, who were already in the ghetto. At the beginning of 1942 Isaak succeeded to take his daughter Gita out of the ghetto. She was hidden by Sofija Binkienė.
After some time Isaak’s wife Raya ran away from the ghetto together with her mother and they were hidden by Jadvyga Muralienė. Isaak ran away from the ghetto in autumn 1943. For the period of one month he had been hiding in Professor Mažylis’ house again until he was taken from there by Klemensas Kaušinis, who took him to his relatives in the Moletas region. Isaak Judelevich, his wife Raya and daughter Gita were helped by different people. But, unfortunately, in 1944, with the approach of the front line Isaak was caught and sent to prison first, but later to the concentration camp in Germany. Isaak’s wife Raya and daughter Gita, who stayed to live in Lithuania, got the permission to emigrate to Israel in 1970. Judelevich survived the camp and after the war emigrated to Israel. The family got united 26 years after the war.
Prof. Mažylis’ wife Antanina Mažylienė helped to hide also Tamara Lazerson and Emanuel Subotsky. Professor Mažylis had been hiding in his hospital also a Jewish baby, Gregory Teper, who was born in the ghetto of Kaunas and after the war was taken by his uncle. Gregory Teper lives in Israel nowadays.
